What We Do
We are working directly with the Sri Lankan Wildlife Conservation Society to expand Project Orange Elephant. With our help, Project Orange Elephant can provide assistance and more orange trees to new villages in Sri Lanka. The orange trees provide a safe and effective barrier between the crops and elephants. As an added bonus, local farmers are able to sell the oranges to super markets. The elephants are safe, the farmers have a new sustainable income, and the Sri Lankan people are not at risk. It’s really a win win.
Why Oranges?
Did you know that Sri Lankan elephants don’t like citrus? In 2006, research scientists with SLWCS conducted trials on Sri Lankan elephants and found they have a natural aversion to citrus.
Project Orange Elephant was created to plant orange trees around farms in Sri Lanka, effectively protecting crops from destructive elephants. This method is currently being used in 12 villages, and EleBalance is helping to expand the project.
